Trumpet
Ron K. Taylor's musical initiation began at the famed Apollo Theater in Harlem. On stage were Nancy Wilson, Oscar Brown Jr, Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers, and The Cannonball Adderley Sextet. Though Ron was immediately struck by both the music and the audience, what absolutely floored the youngster were the passion of young trumpeter Lee Morgan and the fiery playing of Nat Adderley.
The inspired eleven years old Taylor purchased his first trumpet from a New York City pawnshop and never looked back. Throughout his career, Taylor has explored many styles with a variety of artists, including George Benson, T.S. Monk and Lionel Hampton, as well as his childhood idol, Art Blakey.
As a working musician on the New York scene it was a matter of survival to become versed in the languages of R&B (Ron has worked with Wilson Pickett, Patti LaBelle, Stevie Wonder, and others), Latin as well as Caribbean music, Jazz, and Classical (Symphony of the New World at Lincoln Center in New York).
Beginning with Jimmy Owens, Taylor has studied with some of the finest musicians and educators in music history. The short list includes Kenny Dorham and Lee Morgan. He also studied trumpet technique with Carmine Caruso, Vince Penzarella, and others. Furthermore, Ron has studied the music of jazz greats such as Clifford Brown, Maurice Andre, Stravinsky, Ravel, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Louis Armstrong, and Dizzy Gillespie to name a few. Ron has a great deal of teaching experience, having taught in the public school system for several years in addition to private lessons.
